Yoga is full of connotations still. Folks imagine the very bendy stretching away at their hamstrings to get their legs behind heads. The young and the beautiful striking implausible poses on beaches. Indian gurus high up in the mountains sitting cross-legged for years on end.
But I’ve found that yoga is an indispensible tool in my tool-kits for dealing with the physical and emotional ups and downs of life. It’s not something just for the young and stretchy. In fact, like most things in life, i think that yoga’s mostly lost on the young and stretchy. In fact, the practices of yoga – of simple moving and breathing together, of moving mindfulness, are very ancient, but simple practices which can bring amazing healing, stress-relief, control of the inevitable causes of anxiety in life, and most importantly, just makes you feel wonderful, energised and brand new.
My mission is to bring some of the wonderful, healing, health-giving practices of the top teachers of yoga to the everyday working folks like you and me. I’ve worked as a solicitor in the city for years. I know all too well that life is so busy, it’s so hard to grab that hour a day every day to get to yoga class. I worked in the city, and that’s pretty unrealistic I think, and now running my own company, it’s just a giggle that I’d have that kind of time to de-stess.
Often people imagine that when they fit ‘yoga’ into their lives, their living some kind of alternate-reality, pinterest-worthy life. They’ve given up the job and live the good life. That daily practice just seems too far out of reach.
So many city folks instead do the more accessible and efficient means of stress relief, which if you’re like I was, was two fold. First of all, plan holidays wisely. Spend a lot of time and thought planning those weeks in which you will feel ironed out and rejuvenated, body and soul on your precious holidays. And the second daily practice is the time-honoured practice of getting home from work, putting on the PJ’s and sinking a bottle or so of wine, or just meeting up with friends in the pub for a laugh.
I’m not saying that any of these are a bad idea. All are just wonderful and certainly have their place in your toolkit for getting through the daily grind. But are they really hitting the sweet-spot whereby you feel that you’re rejuvenated, refreshed, on a daily basis?
I was a smoker, back in the day in the city, and I found the perfect way, for me to turn the habit around. And it was all about that liminal, that precious time between home from work and cigarette/glass of wine.
I just decided to see if I could turn this time around myself. I was already practicing yoga, so I had a connection to my body and breath and wanted to improve my health. And I used the 10 minutes transition time between coming home, exhausted, a daily wreck, before I made supper.
If there is any time in anybody’s day that I recommend a yoga practice, it’s not necessarily sun-rise with the gurus - who has the dedication for that. Or after supper in a food-coma. But it’s that beautiful, precious 10 minutes just home from work.
If there’s one thing I’d recommend you to do, it’s to just change your daily timetable and reclaim that ten minutes so it becomes your daily dose of health.
